Prototype-Pepper's Ghost
OK so what is this ground breaking technology that is more than one hundred years old? It's known as the Pepper's Ghost illusion or Pepper's Pyramid. This idea was first laid out by John Henry Pepper in 1862 and recently got some attention when it was used to resurrect Tupac Shakur from the grave. You no doubt have seen this effect used on some of the Disney attractions like in Haunted Mansion. Walt Disney has been doing immersive story telling for more than 50 years!
For my project I am only going to view from 180* so a non-pyramid shape as seen in this Youtube video will be my next prototype. The basic idea is straightforward, I lasercut a pyramid from thin plexiglass and assembled it using clear tape. I also lasercut a plywood box and painted it black to get an idea of what this will look like when it is in a rack.
Some additional research led me to a project by Xuan Luo. See most of the videos out there don't show 4 different sides of an object, and don't really adjust the distortion of the image. So call them a first order approach. Xuan takes it to the next level and I would be really interested in somehow forming a driver so that Unreal Engine could make the conversions and drive a Pepper display in realtime. I found some hints regarding Unreal Engine here ( https://answers.unrealengine.com/questions/344403/project-for-hologram-projection.html )
