Sharing Video in 2021
Thee are three pretty basic forms of digital communication, written text, music/audio, and video. It is pretty wild to think one of these most basic communication types has been all but controlled by one entity, YouTube. Why can't I share video on the Internet without using Youtube? What will a peer to peer video sharing solution look like? How can I search and index video content I want to consume? How can an artist like myself be fairly compensated for their video content? All I think good questions to consider here in 2021, so I set out to find the most popular peer to peer video sites, but more importantly I'm committed to putting my content on these sites.
I asked myself what are my own requirements as a consumer and creator, for a video sharing application.
- No ads, at a minimum no pre-roll or mid roll ads. Often I just want to find a solution to a problem, the solution could be as quick as 10-20 seconds, no time for ads.
2. The videos need to be able to be indexed and searched without a gatekeeper's bias.
3. A Creative Commons type of copyright assignment should be supported, sometimes I want to be paid for my creations, sometimes I want people to freely use and distribute my content.
4. I want a true peer to peer solution, no trusted third party, no gatekeeper etc.
Let's look at a few:
LBRY Looks good at first site, and checks many of the above requirements
Flixxo I'm not seeing much information on this one.
Let me know of others. Could a looser solution based on Bittorrent be feasible?
